This Berry Blissful Açaí Bowl will make your day brighter!

Not sure which one was more difficult... coming up with the perfect açaí smoothie bowl recipe, or learning how to properly pronounce açaí... which, by the way, is ah-SIGH-ee. Whatever the case, this smoothie bowl will power up your body with a ton of nutrients. But be warned, it may also give you a smoothie bowl mustache... a true sign of pure plant-based happiness.

Berries are some of the healthiest foods to include in your diet. The Amazonian palm berry, a.k.a. the AÇAÍ BERRY, is an antioxidant and fiber-rich powerhouse harvested from açaí palm trees native to South American rainforests.

Unless you find yourself strolling through the Amazon, it's nearly impossible to enjoy these berries fresh or raw because they they go rancid very quickly. That's why you'll often see recipes (like this one) that use frozen açaí packets or açaí powder.

Whether fresh or frozen, their deep dark purplish color stays constant thanks to their phytochemicals (plant pigments) known as anthocyanins.

Anthocyanins (also found in blueberries, blackberries and many other purple/red plant foods) are disease-fighting compounds with high antioxidant activity that has been strongly linked to protecting our cells from oxidative stress (which can often lead to inflammation). They have also been linked to improved memory and brain function because of their ability to increase blood flow to the brain. Anthocyanins have even shown to engage in anti-cancer activities such as anti-inflammation, prevention of cancer cell proliferation and activation of detoxifying enzymes.

As if these nutrient facts don't make us HAPPY enough, anthocyanins are also linked to improved mood and decreased risk of developing depression... How 'bout dah?!

While açaí berries have very little protein, they do contain 19 different amino acids and have a strong fiber profile (and if you're like us, we load up our smoothie bowls with seeds rich in protein like hemp and chia).

1 packet of pure açaí berry contains:

  • 70 calories

  • 1 g protein

  • 5 g total fat

  • 4 g carbohydrate

  • 2 g fiber

  • 2 % calcium (based on 2,000 calorie diet)

And while açaí is the main ingredient, we haven't even mentioned all the other delicious, nutritious ingredients that together make this BLISSFUL bowl one of the best, most invigorating ways to start your day... or end your day. It's your smoothie bowl, eat it whenever and however you please!

Which reminds me... we love a PLETHORA of toppings. A few suggestions? Chopped nuts, seeds, cacao nibs, coconut flakes, goji berries... the list goes on and on, and will only make your creation more nutrient-dense!

**Though we do SERIOUSLY suggest getting your toppings ready before making the smoothie base... no one wants a sad, melty smoothie bowl!

Sweet 'n Tart

Surprisingly Filling

So tasty you'll want to eat it everyday

Total Time: 10-15 minutes

Servings: 1-2

What You Will Need

*High speed blender for perfect consistency (we use a Vitamix)

1 unsweetened açaí packet

1 large frozen banana, halved (*half bananas give it optimal thickness*)

1 cup frozen blueberries

1 small handful (or 1/3 cup) of pineapple chunks

1 tbsp maple syrup

1 tbsp ground flax seed

1/3 cup pure organic apple juice

1/3 cup almond milk

Handful of kale (optional)

2-3 pitted medjool dates (optional and can sub for maple)

1/2 cup granola of choice

  1. Put all of the ingredients except for granola into your blender.

  2. Pulse on lowest setting (1 for Vitamix) and slowly bring to the highest setting.

  3. Mash the contents down with your blender wand until the desired consistency is reached. Want to know when you've reached the ideal consistency? We're satisfied when we can hold the blender upside without spilling ONE DROP. I suggest you try the same (over your serving bowl of course in case it does decide to not comply with proper smoothie bowl etiquette!)

  4. Fill your serving bowl with granola and spread smoothie base on top.

  5. Garnish with your favorite toppings!

  6. Drift away into BERRY BLISS!
